Oenothera heterophylla

Common name: Sand evening primrose, variable evening primrose

A member of the evening primrose family, Oenothera heterophylla is a winter annual or biennial herb growing up to 100 cm tall a fleshy taproot. It has alternate, simple leaves, the upper leaves are sessile and clasp the stems. The flowers are borne in elongate terminal spikes and open around sunset. Flowering is form June – September. It is native to the South-Central region of the United States, with a disjunct eastern population in Alabama.
